Passaic Valley Water Commission Begins Hydrant Flushing After Restoring 24-Inch and 30-Inch Pipelines - Boil Water Advisory Remains in Effect for Parts of Paterson, Prospect Park, Haledon, and North Haledon
**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**
(Paterson, N.J. – August 22, 2025) – Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) crews have begun a large-scale flushing program, now that both the 24-inch and 30-inch pipelines at Great Falls are back in service.
The flushing process involves systematically opening and flushing more than 2,000 hydrants throughout Paterson and Prospect Park. This critical step moves fresh water through the distribution system, helping ensure water quality meets all state and federal safety standards. Weather permitting, flushing is expected to take up to 12 days to complete.
During the flushing process, customers may experience temporary discoloration of their tap water and/or reduced water pressure. This discoloration is caused by sediment and minerals that have accumulated in the water mains over time. After flushing, customers experiencing discoloration are encouraged to run their cold taps until the water is clear.
“Restoring both pipelines was a major milestone, and now we can focus on the essential process of flushing the system,” said PVWC Executive Director Jim Mueller. “This work is key to lifting the boil water advisory and ensuring customers have reliable, safe water.”
To help customers track progress, PVWC has launched an interactive dashboard showing where flushing is actively taking place. Customers can visit: www.pvwc.com/patersonflushing to see if hydrant flushing is underway in their neighborhood.
Boil Water Advisory
In coordination with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), PVWC has already lifted the Boil Water Advisory for nearly 77,000 customers in parts of Paterson, specifically Broadway and all streets south of Broadway, east of Spruce Street, and west of Route 20.
The Boil Water Advisory remains in effect for:
- Customers in Paterson outside of the area specified above and the Borough of Prospect Park
- Customers served by the Manchester Utilities Authority (NJ1603001) in Haledon and North Haledon
Residents and businesses under the advisory must continue to boil water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, or making ice—or use bottled water—until PVWC provides official notice that the water is safe.
Customer Safety Reminder
PVWC water quality testing crews wear official uniforms and carry photo ID badges. Customers are reminded not to open their doors to anyone lacking proper credentials. Suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the local police department.
