As winter approaches, Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) is reminding its customers to prepare their homes for colder weather. Key tips to help prevent freezing water pipes include:

· Insulate pipes: Protect water pipes from freezing by insulating them with tape or pipe sleeves.

· Drip faucets: Allow faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold to prevent pipes from freezing. Moving water through pipes helps prevent freezing.

· Winterize outdoor plumbing: Disconnect hoses and close outdoor valves.

· Check for leaks: Regularly inspect pipes for leaks. Repairing leaks promptly can prevent major issues.

· Monitor water usage: Keep an eye on your water usage during colder months, as sudden spikes in consumption may indicate a leak or potential issue.

· Keeping hydrants clear of snow: With the winter storm approaching, please ensure that fire hydrants are clear of snow and remain easily accessible for emergency services.

PVWC preemptively identifies and addresses any vulnerabilities that can be intensified by freezing temperatures across its water distribution system. In addition, dedicated PVWC staff members are on standby round-the-clock to promptly address and resolve any weather-related issues that may arise, ensuring swift responses to customer concerns.
