FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Clifton, N.J. – June 3, 2026) – Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) has expanded the precautionary boil water advisory previously issued for portions of Clifton and Passaic as crews continue emergency repairs on a large transmission main located on Chittenden Road in Clifton.
To facilitate the next phase of repairs, PVWC will temporarily shut down the 51-inch transmission main beginning at approximately 10:00 p.m. tonight. The shutdown is expected to remain in effect until approximately 5:00 a.m. Thursday morning, although the duration may vary depending on field conditions.
As a result of the planned shutdown and anticipated pressure fluctuations throughout the distribution system, the precautionary boil water advisory area has been expanded. Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 customers in Clifton and Passaic are now under the advisory.
The advisory is being issued as a precaution due to the potential for pressure losses within the water distribution system. While there is currently no evidence of contamination, reductions in water pressure can increase the risk of contaminants entering water mains. In accordance with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) requirements, customers in the affected area are advised to boil water until testing confirms water quality meets all applicable standards.
Customers located within the affected area shown on the attached map should follow the advisory until further notice.
Immediate Actions Required
Boil Water Before Use
Customers should bring all water used for the following purposes to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before use:
• Drinking
• Cooking and food preparation
• Making ice
• Brushing teeth
• Washing dishes
• Preparing infant formula
• Washing fruits and vegetables
Alternative Water Sources
Customers may also use bottled water for these purposes until the advisory is lifted.
Reason for the Advisory
The precautionary boil water advisory is being issued due to the potential for pressure fluctuations associated with the repair of the 51-inch transmission main. Although there is currently no evidence of contamination, pressure losses can increase the risk of contaminants entering the water distribution system.
As a precaution and in accordance with state drinking water regulations, customers in the affected area are advised to boil water until sampling and laboratory testing confirm that water quality meets all applicable standards.
Ongoing Efforts
PVWC crews continue to work around the clock to complete repairs and restore the system to normal operating conditions. Following completion of the repairs, PVWC will conduct comprehensive water quality sampling throughout the affected area.
The boil water advisory will remain in effect until:
1. Water system pressure is fully restored; and
2. Laboratory test results confirm that the water is safe for consumption.
Customers will be notified immediately when the advisory is lifted.
